Zenas Winsor McCay was an American cartoonist and animator. McCay was best known for his comic strip Little Nemo and Gerite the Dinosaur an animated film. He began is career by making poster and performing at dines museums. In 1898 in started illustrating for newspapers and magazines. It was when McCay worked at New York Herald in 1903 to 1910, that he created some of his best comic strips, like Little Sammy Sneeze and Dream of the Rarebit Fiend. Little Nemo in Slumberland created in 1905 was McCay’s most praised comic. It demonstrated his mastery of color and perspective, which was not seen a lot in comics of those days. Between the years 1911 and 1921 he made ten animated films, his most famous one being Gerte the Dinosaur. In 1911 he moved to William Randolph Heart’s chain of newspapers to be editor of the comic strips. McCay’s animation skills and level was not match in those days until Walt Disney showed up. His work as influenced many of artist through out the years, like William Joyce, André LeBlanc, Moebius, Maurice Sendak, Chris Ware and Bill Watterson.
